NordicAST organisation

NordicAST (Nordic Committee on Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing) is a Nordic methodology committee for susceptibility testing issues. The organisation's legal principal is NSCMID (Nordic Society for Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases).

NordicAST's tasks are as follows:

To adapt methods for susceptibility testing and characterisation of resistance mechanisms according to Nordic conditions.

  • To maintain a web page where method documents and breakpoint tables are available free of charge in Scandinavian languages.
  • To organise workshops for further training of laboratory staff.
  • To provide advice on internal quality control at Nordic laboratories.
  • To initiate studies that can contribute to the improvement of susceptibility testing routines.
  • To support other Nordic networking problems that work with susceptibility testing issues.

The decision making process in NordicAST is based on a consensus model. Countries can ask to be exempt from a decision if the group is unable to reach a consensus. This should always be recorded and clarified on NordicAST's web pages.

NordicAST does not handle issues such as treatment guidelines, resistance surveillance and monitoring of antibiotic consumption, but may collaborate with organisations that deal with these type of questions when they seek help with methodological issues.
